Onlays & Inlays
To Fix a Damaged Tooth and Make It Look Like New
Imperfections in your smile can cause embarrassment and grow worse over time if not taken care of. Dr. Gioia uses a variety of cosmetic treatments to not only improve the appearance of your teeth but also restore their health and function.
If a tooth is severely damaged due to infection or physical trauma, Dr. Gioia may elect to restore it using a dental crown. When the damage is less extensive, he might use an onlay or an inlay instead. One of these natural-looking treatments could be the best way to fix your damaged tooth.
What Are Inlays & Onlays?
An inlay or an onlay is often the best option for restoring a tooth that’s impaired by issues such as chips or cracks or a cavity that’s too large to treat with a regular filling. Unlike a dental filling, onlays and inlays are indirect restorations. That means they’re created outside the body and then applied to the damaged area, which makes them stronger than fillings.
An inlay is used when only the biting surface of the tooth is damaged.
An onlay, on the other hand, is designed to restore the chewing surface in addition to the cusps at the edges of the tooth.
The Inlay/Onlay Process
During your initial consultation, Dr. Gioia will evaluate your tooth to determine the severity of the damage. This will help him decide if an inlay or an onlay is the right treatment for you.
The next step is taking digital images of the affected tooth and sending this information to our dental lab where they’ll create your custom-molded restoration.
Once your new restoration is ready, you’ll return to our office so Dr. Gioia can place your restoration. He’ll start by numbing the area with novocaine, so you won’t feel a thing.
After Dr. Gioia prepares the tooth, he’ll place the inlay or onlay onto the tooth and make sure it fits properly. Finally, he’ll bond the restoration to the tooth and smooth out its surfaces.
Is an Inlay or Onlay Right for You?
If left untreated, a damaged tooth can cause further harm to your smile. An inlay or an onlay is often the best way to make your teeth look and feel like new.
An inlay or an onlay can be an effective solution for a patient whose tooth is:
- Cracked or fractured
- Severely decayed
- Not damaged enough to require a crown
