Receive Extra Protection Against Cavities
Cavities are a major threat to your smile. Unfortunately, kids and younger teens are at the highest risk for tooth decay, the bacterial infection that causes cavities.
Visiting Dr. Gioia for regular checkups together with daily brushing and flossing are an essential combination for fighting cavities. But how would you like to have an extra layer of protection for your kid’s smile?
Dental sealants are an easy and economical way to protect your child from tooth decay. By applying a thin protective plastic coating to the patient’s smile, we can dramatically reduce their chances of getting cavities.
The Dental Sealant Process
The teeth closer to the back of your smile with large chewing surfaces are called molars and premolars. These teeth have grooves and fissures where harmful bacteria can penetrate and cause decay. A dental sealant blocks the bacteria to prevent cavities.
We begin the dental sealant process by carefully cleaning and drying your teeth. Next, we’ll place a special gel on your teeth to roughen the surface, making it easier for the sealant to adhere to your teeth. We remove the gel before placing the sealant.
Finally, we’ll apply a thin coat of dental sealant to your teeth. This treatment will protect your smile by blocking out harmful bacteria for years to come.
Who Should Receive Dental Sealants?
Dental sealants are most often recommended for children and teens between the ages of five and fourteen because this is when they’re most prone to cavities. But adults can benefit from sealants as well because everyone is susceptible to tooth decay. For example, Dr. Gioia might recommend sealants for adult patients who have already had a number of fillings placed in order to prevent further decay.
