The Cure for Dental Anxiety
Do you feel apprehensive about visiting the dentist? You’re not alone. Just the thought of scheduling an appointment can be enough to make some patients feel uneasy. According to Colgate, more than one in seven Americans have experienced dental anxiety.
Dr. William Gioia doesn’t want anything to prevent you from receiving the services we provide to protect your smile. That’s why we offer sedation dentistry so you can feel relaxed and comfortable while getting the care you need.
Reasons for Sedation
In addition to helping people overcome dental anxiety, sedation dentistry can be beneficial for patients who:
- Have difficulty sitting still
- Require extensive treatment
- Have sensitive teeth or a low pain threshold
- Experience a Gag Reflex, an involuntary muscle contraction that occurs when objects are placed inside your mouth
Dr. Gioia offers oral sedation, a convenient form of relaxation administered in pill form. Oral sedation allows the patient to stay conscious while receiving treatment. Although you’ll remain awake throughout your procedure, you’ll be completely calm and you won’t feel any discomfort.
Oral sedation makes patients drowsy, which may cause you to doze off into a light sleep during your procedure. If you choose oral sedation, you’ll want to arrange to have someone drive you home following your procedure because it takes some time for the effects of the sedative to completely wear off.
Nitrous oxide is another sedation option offered by Dr. Gioia. Commonly referred to as laughing gas, this type of sedation allows you to feel completely relaxed during your procedure.
Nitrous oxide is administered through inhalation — you simply breathe it in. This mild form of sedation is safe and fast-acting. With nitrous oxide sedation, you’ll remain conscious and alert, but you’ll feel very calm.
Nitrous oxide wears off quickly, so patients can usually drive themselves home shortly after their procedure is complete.
